A Guide for Celebrating Advent with Children
My family has spent the past few years enjoy the very old tradition of Celebrating Advent. One would think that would be a natural practice for us, combining my Catholic upbringing with my husband's evangelical roots, but not so.
We've both understood Advent as a time to prepare for the full celebration of Christ's birth, but communicating to our children the reasons for the practice and use of an Advent wreath and candles alluded us. And so began a process of learning, culling together resources from the internet, and figuring out how to explain time-old traditions in everyday child speak.
What started as a bit of typing out notes turned into a pretty good resource guide to lead us through Advent. I'm happy to offer these simple notes to you, for your personal use. May this little guide be just what you need to celebrate Christ this Christmas time with your family. Since it is a bit a long for a post, you can
and it will come up on a new web page, which you can either bookmark to refer back to or print out for your personal use.
JESSE TREE...
Another tradition for preparing our hearts for Christmas is the use of a Jesse Tree. The Reformed Church of America website has a wonderful resource for making your own Jesse Tree, including Scripture and devotional readings for every day in December. I highly recommend checking it out. We'll be embarking on the Jesse Tree tradition this Christmas season.

Bless you precious one.
This is just wonderful! Thank you so much for putting this together. I was also raised Catholic and do attend mass with my Dad when I am home but like you married and evangelical. I became a Charismatic Catholic but your priest thought it was "hogwash"....anyway, my husband became very turned off and wanted to find a church we both enjoyed and felt blessed by so that is what I did. I am also a Benedictine Oblate and fortunately you don't have to be Catholic to be an oblate or you can be a lapsed Catholic like I am.
Anyway, we always have the Advent Wreath in our home, a tradition I am happy I kept.
Have a great day!
God Bless!
