God's Word
1 Peter 1:15-16 NIV

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Holiness is something most of us believe is impossible. Some of us come from a deep liturgical background and consider holiness as something reserved for the sacraments and clergy. Others come from a more casual approach to our faith and believe that holiness is archaic or unnecessary. Of course, plenty of folks fall somewhere in between, sensing a need for holiness but not quite sure how to find it.

According to the Word, holiness is something that as followers of Christ, we are called to understand and practice. Our holy habits, however, are not mustered up; they come from the one who is Holy: Jesus. According to this verse from 1 Peter, we are not holy because it is a nice idea; we are in the process of being holy because the Lord is holy.

Becoming holy is about getting to know the one that is holy. That is Jesus, of course, as well as His unity with the Father and Holy Spirit. As we read the Word, God will reveal to us His holiness and begin to give us a picture of what it should look like in our own lives.

A Holy Habit

This week, commit to reading Scripture each day. Start with 1 Peter 1:13-26. Read this passage in one chunk, but then go back to it in the following days. Ask the Lord to speak to you about what it means. Grab a journal and write down your thoughts, and even prayers, talking to the Lord in regards to this passage and listening to Him speak to you about the reality of holiness in your own life.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not call us to remain as we are, but rather you've given us an example of holiness as we turn our eyes unto Jesus. Lord, transform us from the inside out as we look to your Word for understanding about what it means to be holy. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

This is an excellent devotional series. I think I will have to make several trips here to read and reread. I really need this encouragement. I would love to link the button to my site, but does not fit properly. If you have any suggestions, they would be most helpful. I have many friends who would be inspired. Blessings, Angela
